Dr. Riley attended the University of California, San Francisco earning a D.D.S. and M.S.(Pharmacology) degrees in 1972. He then attended the University of Alabama, Birmingham earning a M.D. degree in 1977. Surgical specialty training include residencies in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the University of California, Los Angeles and Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery from Stanford University.

Dr. Riley has continued his clinical affiliation with the Stanford University School of Medicine since 1982. Clinical appointments include Adjunct Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Behavioral Science (Sleep Medicine). He is Diplomat of the American Board of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. His 25 years of clinical practice and research have revolved around surgery of the facial skeleton and airway reconstruction as it relates to sleep disordered breathing (sleep apnea). His awards include American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Ira Tresley Research Award, 1987; Chief Residents Teaching Award, Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, Stanford University School of Medicine, 1994; Outstanding Achievement in Medicine Award, Santa Clara County Medical Association, 2001. His clinical research interests has resulted in contributions in over 100 scientific publications and books.
We are pleased and honored to announce that Dr. Stephen Schendel is joining the California Sleep Institute (formerly the Center for Facial and Airway Reconstructive Surgery) . In addition, Dr. Schendel will also be available to see cosmetic patients at the California Face and Laser Institute. He is an internationally recognized surgeon, researcher and teacher in pediatric and adult craniofacial reconstruction, plastic and maxillofacial surgery, as well as upper airway reconstruction for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. He will extend and broaden the scope of diagnosis and treatment available at our center.

Dr. Schendel’s training is extensive and impressive. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Dental School in 1973. Following this, he completed a four-year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Southwestern Medical School, Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. From 1979 to 1980 he studied in France as a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Nantes. The emphasis of this study was cleft lip & palate surgery and dentofacial orthopedics, both under the tutelage of Dr. Jean Delaire. Dr. Schendel then graduated from the University of Hawaii Medical School in 1983 and completed a General Surgery internship at Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas. He completed an additional two years of General Surgery training at Stanford University Medical Center, followed by completion of the Plastic Surgery training program at Stanford. He spent 1987 to 1988 as an assistant to Dr. Paul Tessier in Paris, France, and also was recipient of a Chateaubriand French Research Fellowship.
Dr. Schendel’s surgical interests are craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery, including sleep apnea and orthognathic surgery. He is also a leader in the field of distraction osteogenesis for the correction of facial deformities. He is board-certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Plastic Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics.
